The Cooper’s Hill
Cheese-Rolling and Wake takes place on the Spring Bank holiday at Cooper’s Hill
in the village of Brockworth, near Gloucester.
It involves rolling a 9lb
round of Double Gloucester cheese down the hill with competitors chasing after
it. The idea is that whoever catches the cheese wins, but in reality, the first
person to cross the finish line is crowned the winner and gets the cheese as a
reward.
Unsurprisingly,there are
often several injuries during each event.
That won’t deter those
involved, however. Since 2010, when the official competition was
cancelled, the event has taken place spontaneously without any management.
‘No-one’s going to stop us
doing it,’ said former winner Helen Thorpe in 2011.
